Spanish Water Dogs are a very new breed in Australia, but they are in fact a very old breed first mentioned in historical literature back to 1110 AD. Back in 2018, Judith arranged the import of a number of SWDs from Europe and the UK.
Spanish Water Dogs are a true multi-purpose breed, can be a working farm dog as a livestock herding dog, are used as a hunting dog, as a flushing and retrieving dog for waterfowl and smaller game, in Europe they are used as guardians and are used by Government authorities in scent work.
The breed is robust, energetic and strong. Like Lagottos they are non shedding & to an untrained eye look very much like a Lagotto.
Males should weigh 18-22 kgs and be 44-50 cm in height at the wither while females 14-18 kgs and 40-46 cm in height.
They can be tailed or bob tailed.
We suggest that SWDs are suitable for owners with an active lifestyle, possibly without very young children.
The Breed Standard suggests that they can be quirky, inventive, strong-willed, moody & territorial.
